About GCRF

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a five-year £1.5 billion funding stream, which forms part of the UK's commitment to support cutting-edge research that addresses the problems faced by developing countries. The fund, administered through delivery partners including the Research Councils and national academies, seeks to address global challenges through disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, strengthen capability for research and innovation within both the UK and developing countries, and provide an agile response to emergencies and opportunities.

GCRF has recently launched a funding call, inviting proposal from eligible UK research organisations to establish and lead a number of Interdisciplinary Research Hubs to address intractable challenges faced by developing countries. The Collective Fund aims to “incorporate new collaboration and partnerships in order to redefine how we approach development challenges in innovative, transformative and inter-disciplinary ways”. The application process has three key deadlines:

  1. Intention to Submit Survey (ITS): 29th September 2017
  2. Submission of Outline proposals: 9th November 2017
  3. Submission of full proposals (by invitation only): May 2018 (exact date TBC)

About the webinar

This webinar is intended for researchers based in the global South with the purpose of explaining the opportunities provided by the GCRF calls and the GCRF Collective Fund call in particular. It is suitable for all institutions and researchers from the Global South, including, but not limited to, the ESPA research community.

During the discussion we will review all publicly available sources of information about GCRF calls, but with a particular view to addressing the questions and concerns of potential applicants from the Global South.

The webinar will cover:

  • Brief introduction to GCRF – what it is, how it works;
  • Overview of the funding call;
  • Eligibility;
  • Timeline;
  • Role of partnerships, with a focus on the role and opportunities for Southern partners;
  • Tips and ‘good practice’ in preparing a funding application for GCRF;
  • ESPA ‘lessons learned’ in North/South partnership.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions by typing them in a chat box.

In addition to live participation, the webinar will be recorded and available to Southern partners in video format on the GCRF and ESPA websites and Youtube channels.
