Event description

Description

The General Data Protection Regulation comes into full effect on 25 May. Did you know that as a freelance journalist you need to be registered and comply with the new rules? Did you know you could be heavily fined for not handling contact data properly?

This one-day training course aimed at freelance journalists who are sole traders will cover:

  • Who needs to register and why? The impact for creators and “traders”/business entities and the implications of breaches.
  • Data consent – what is needed (and how do you do it), covering journalism/literature and art/photography and images, corporate and “retail” work; additional sensitivities regarding vulnerable individuals, children (and “authorised adults”), mental capacity (and power of attorney or equivalent), online policy statements and everyday “business to business” communication.
  • Data retention – How long is “necessary” and why? The inconsistencies of GDPR and copyright; HMRC, defamation limitation period; “creative longevity” – the “post-mortem” implications. What is “no longer than is necessary”? Can you maintain achives such as “cuttings files” and samples of one’s work ?
  • Data Storage – Safeguarding paper and electronic records; the “cloud”; e-mail, passwords and encryption.

The format of the day will be fairly informal, using source documents, group work (but no role play), and based on working from existing knowledge levels. Copies of some documents and relevant supporting notes will be provided. (The training is provided for guidance only and where doubt persists or specific details are required, qualified legal advice should be sought.)

Your trainer is Adam Christie - a long-standing member of the NUJ and editor and principal author of the union’s Freelance Fact Pack for many years, which includes guidance on existing data protection requirements for NUJ members.

NOTE: This course is free to members of Manchester and Salford NUJ. A deposit of £10 is required, to be fully refunded on attendance. Places are limited so book soon!

If you are not a member of the NUJ, please consider joining if you'd like to attend.

FAQs

What's the refund policy?

Your £10 ticket is a deposit and you will be fully refunded if you attend the course. The branch has decided to ask for refundable deposits so as to ensure people turn up as booked and don't deprive someone else of a place by being a no-show. No-shows will forfeit their deposit.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Email louise@louisebolotin.com - she is the branch freelance and training officer.

Can I update my registration information?
