Description

“Go directly to GDPR. Do not pass 2018, do not pay €20M”

Are you wondering what GDPR means for your business?

The General Data Protection Regulation will come into effect in May 2018.

This evening talk will be a short introduction - from a non-lawyer, giving some simple practical guidelines for organisations to get ready for the new law.

The critical component in this is organisations’ awareness of the personal data they process: what, why, and how. The headlines about GDPR may be dominated by the level of potential fines as a “stick”, but this should be taken in context. Requirements on security of data and for data protection impact assessment may also function as a “carrot” for a positive engagement with stakeholders on data practices.

Speaker:

Professor Eerke Boiten came to the UK from his native country The Netherlands as a computer science postdoc at the University of Kent in 1995, and stayed there until 2017. Initially a researcher and academic working in a foundational area of computing (using mathematics to prove programs work as required), he branched out into computer security 10 years ago.

He set up and led the University's interdisciplinary Research Centre in Cyber Security, which achieved the EPSRC/GCHQ accreditation as an Academic Centre of Excellence in 2015. Looking beyond just his own discipline, Eerke developed an interest in the policy sides of data privacy from a perspective of technical realism. He engages in public debate in this area, including on data protection in general and on medical data, and was a reviewer for the Nuffield Bioethics report on Biological and Health Data in 2015.

In April 2017 he joined the Cyber Technology Institute at De Montfort University as Professor of Cyber Security.

This evening talk is part of #DMUCyberWednesdays - a series of monthly workshops for the general public and local businesses, designed to introduce issues relating to cyber security and online safety.
