Saturday 18th March 2017

This Taster Day is for people who have applied or are thinking of applying for the following undergraduate degree programmes in 2017-18:

  • BSc Geography
  • BA Human Geography
  • BSc Social Sciences
  • BSc Community Development and Public Policy

The day will consist of an introduction to the above degrees and to the Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies. This will include an opportunity to meet academic staff and current undergraduate students. There will also be a variety of speakers – including a visiting guest lecturer from Canada – who will illustrate how and why studying geography and social science are profoundly relevant for making sense of the complex and sometimes bewildering modern world that we live in.

Schedule for the day

1.30 – 2.00: Reception with refreshments – potential students will be able to meet academic staff and current undergraduate students informally – Room MAL G15

2.00 – 2.05: Welcome and Introduction to the Department of Geography, Birkbeck, University of London – Dr. Paul Watt, Reader in Urban Studies, Department of GEDS, Birkbeck – Room MAL B18

2.05 – 2.45: ‘First Generation African-Caribbean Women Learners in London – a vibrant legacy’presentation by Dr. Jan Etienne, Associate Lecturer, School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, Birkbeck – Room MAL B18

2.45 – 3.15: presentation on the Undergraduate Programmes at the Department of Geography, Birkbeck – Dr. Paul Watt and current undergraduate students – Room MAL B18

3.15 – 3.30: ‘The Geography of the London Housing Crisis’ – Dr. Paul Watt – Room MAL B18

3.30 – 4.15: ‘Olympic Exclusions: Youth, Poverty, and Social Legacies’presentation by Dr. Jacqueline Kennelly, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada – Room MAL B18
