IAS Gender and Feminism Network

Feminism in the Age of Populism: A Roundtable Discussion

Join the Gender and Feminism Research Network at the Institute of Advanced Studies for this roundtable discussion. What is the role of feminism in the era of Trump, Brexit, resurgent nationalism in Europe, and the global re-configuration of the right? In the second decade of the 21st century, feminism seems to be confronting new foes, but it is also producing a raft of new potential solutions in the form of #MeToo, pussy hats, and Pussy Riots.

This roundtable discussion will gather a panel of writers, academics and broadcasters to consider the what this moment augers for feminism as a world-wide phenomenon, drawing in new generations of activists, and connecting them with earlier feminist waves. It will also examine the challenge populism poses to ongoing discussions about the place of feminism in interconnected class, race and migration politics, and how these interconnections are challenged, highlighted or strengthened by the current moment.

Speakers:

Professor Jessica Ringrose
Dr. Kaitlyn Reger
Professor Maxine Molyneux
Dr. Charlotte Riley

This event is paired with, and continues on from, a discussion on the same theme held at the University of Sydney in August last year; you can hear a recording of this discussion at: https://soundcloud.com/sydney-ideas/feminism-in-the-age-of-populism
