Event description
Gender Based Violence: Preventive Socialisation

About this Event

Esther Oliver, Professor of Sociology at the University of Barcelona and Researcher at CREA, Community of Researchers on Excellence for All

This seminar is focused on the main contributions of the line of research on preventive socialization with respect to gender based violence developed by CREA (Community of Researchers on Excellence for All). This frames the project Esther is developing during her research stay at the University of Edinburgh. Delving into the link between attraction and violence established in patriarchal society for centuries, this line of research is analysing which patterns form socialization processes that are leading to violent affective and sexual relationships and which ones are leading to passionate, satisfactory and free of violence relationships. From our research, scientific evidence and concrete elements are provided (such as the overcoming of the hegemonic model of masculinity, the theories of love or the role of the Other women and solidarity) for the prevention of GBV. These contributions are relevant for women, girls, professionals, policy makers and the women's movement to foster the building up of socialization processes, from early childhood and in all stages of life, free of any form of violence.
