Gender Challenges: A conversation with Bina Agarwal

Renowned academic of gender studies, Professor Bina Agarwal, will discuss the themes from Gender Challenges a three volume publication of essays from over the past 30 years. Joining Professor Agarwal to discuss the key and emerging challenges to women empowerment will be Professor Melissa Leach, IDS Director and John Thompson, IDS Research Fellow.
About the Speaker
Bina Agarwal is Professor of Development Economics and Environment at the University of Manchester, UK. Prior to this, she was Director and Professor of Economics at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi University. Educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Delhi, she has held distinguished positions at many universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Michigan, Minnesota (where she held the Winton Chair), and the New York University School of Law. She was Harvard's first Daniel Ingalls Visiting Professor, and later a Research Fellow at the Ash Institute, Kennedy School of Government. Agarwal has been President of the International Society for Ecological Economics, Vice-President of the International Economic Association, President of the International Association for Feminist Economics, on the Board of the Global Development Network, and a member of the Commission for the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress, chaired by Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz. She has served on the UN Committee for Development Policy (New York) and UNRISD (Geneva), and continues to be on the advisory boards of several UN and other international bodies, as well the editorial boards of many academic journals. She holds honorary doctorates from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands and the University of Antwerp in Belgium.
