GENDER IDENTITY CONFERENCE

Who do we think we are? Understanding new gender identities amongst children and young people

Trans. Non-binary. Gender-fluid. Gender-queer.

The number of words being used by children and young people to describe their gender identities increases every day. But what do these words mean for the children and young people that claim them and how should we respond?

This all-day community conference will be a fantastic opportunity to explore this question and many others. The event is open to anyone who wants to learn about how children and young peoples’ gender identities are changing and what this means for us as professionals, volunteers, parents/carers, friends and our families. We will hear from young people, families, specialist organisations and professionals living and/or working with issues of gender identity.

There will be a healthy mix of people attending, including social and youth workers, people who work in public services (including health, education and the police), charities, faith and community groups, counsellors and therapists and many more besides. We will also welcome the voices of trans, non-binary and gender-fluid children and young people and their friends, families and parents/carers – for whom there will be a limited number of free places.

Programme

During the morning sessions we will look at what life is like for trans and gender fluid children and young people with a focus on how individuals make sense of their gender identity, support services, current community approaches and future challenges. In the afternoon we will then hear from organisations committed to bringing about positive change by lobbying Government, pushing for positive changes in education and offering trans and gender-fluid children and young people spaces to just be themselves.

Importantly there will be time between speakers to ask questions, talk through what we have heard in smaller groups, share our experiences and imagine different ways of working and being with trans and gender-fluid children and young people.
