Event description
An evening with award-winning author Angela Saini, whose recent books on flawed gender and race "science" inspired a global conversation

About this Event

UCL Women, the grass-roots networking group, is delighted to host Angela Saini at our annual Flagship Lecture series. Angela will touch on the topics of her two recent best-sellers, Inferior and Superior. These books comprehensively debunk the flawed science that has been (mis)used by groups in power for hundreds of years to oppress women and people of colour. Taken together, they serve as a passionate battle-cry for the importance of changing society for the better.

The evening will consist of Angela's talk, followed by an on-stage interview and audience Q&A. Afterwards, there will be drinks and snacks in the adjacent North Cloisters, including a chance to buy copies of Angela's book and to network.

About the Speaker:

Angela is an award-winning science journalist, author and broadcaster.

She regularly presents science programmes for the BBC, and her writing has appeared across the world, including in New Scientist, the Guardian, The Times, Science, Cell, Wired, Wallpaper, Vogue, GQ, among others. Angela's latest book, Superior: The Return of Race Science, was published by 4th Estate in May 2019. Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong, was published in 2017, winning the Physics World Book of the Year and first runner-up in the Goodreads Choice Awards. It has been translated into eleven languages. Her first, Geek Nation, was published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2011, becoming a bestseller in India.

About UCL Women:

Founded in 2013, UCL Women is a networking group for academic staff (PhD, postdoc and above) working as women at UCL. We put on various events throughout the academic year. Any eligible staff are welcome to as many or as few events as they like. Please check out the website for more information and sign up to our mailing list. Our Flagship Lecture is held roughly once a year and has included such notables as Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Laureate; Emmanuelle Charpentier, co-discover of CRISPR; and Jocelyn Burnell-Bell, discoverer of pulsars.
