Event description

Description

The purpose of this symposium is to analyse gender construction in the Portuguese-speaking world from the Middle Ages to the present. The images of women, with their different status, practices and perceptions, still need better assessment in time and place. The construction of masculinity, by contrast, is one of the areas curiously less studied in this world. The history of sexual minorities is relatively well studied, mainly in Brazil, but it is not exhausted. The different gender realities in the old colonial world and the contrasting experiences of postcolonial societies still need further research.

The knowledge of gender construction in the Portuguese-speaking world is thus uneven, to say the least. Publications in English do not reflect the richness of the field. The peculiarities of this world have not been integrated in the mainstream studies on European and world histories of women or gender in general. And we know how divergent was the condition of women and men in this world due to the strongest early modern and modern emigration from Europe, reflected on different impact or integration in different parts of the world.

The purpose is to publish a solid collective book in English, which will draw attention for these specificities and contribute to the renovation of gender studies in a larger context.

The symposium is organised by the Charles Boxer Chair, the Camões Centre at King's and King's Institute of Brazil, in partnership with the Instituto de Ciências Sociais in Lisbon.
