To celebrate the Genée International Ballet Competition returning to Hong Kong this year, the Royal Academy of Dance is excited to offer this practical choreography workshop with this year's Commissioned Choreographer, Carlo Pacis and Benesh Choreologist, Iris Tang. Suitable for ages 14-19 years, Carlo will provide an insight into his choreography methods and how to explore and expand ideas using ballet vocabulary to create and investigate movement. Iris will provide an insight into Benesh Movement Notation.

Biography: Carlo Pacis

Carlo joined the Hong Kong Ballet after graduating with First-class Honours with a BFA in Dance from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 1998. As a senior soloist in the company he essayed lead roles in ballets such as The Merry Widow, Madame Butterfly, Romeo and Juliet and Firecracker, and was a principal dancer in abstract works such as Balanchine’s Rubies and Stanton Welch’s Clear. He received the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Award in 2002 for his technical artistry and the depth of his dramatic reading of roles. In 2006, the company was invited to perform his work, There's a Fly in This Soup, at the 1st Asia Pacific Ballet Festival held in Seoul, Korea. He created the additional choreography in Act I for the company's production of Swan Lake in August 2007 as Choreographic Apprentice under John Meehan and in October that same year he choreographed for Opera Hong Kong's production of Aida, which also toured to Seoul. In June 2009, Carlo obtained his Master of Fine Arts in Dance degree from the HKAPA and his work for Ballet Philippines, Shifting Wait, won the GAWAD BUHAY 2010 Philstage Award for Outstanding Choreography for a Dance Production. Upon his retirement from the stage in August 2010, he joined the teaching staff of the HKAPA and has since been involved in the projects of various local and international institutions. In February 2013, his full-length work for Ballet Philippines, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, premiered in Manila and recently garnered five accolades from GAWAD BUHAY 2013 including the awards for Outstanding Modern Dance Production and Outstanding Choreography for a Dance Production. Most recently in May 2017, he again received the GAWAD BUHAY award of Outstanding Choreography for a Dance Production from Philstage for his work with Ballet Philippines, Weighted Whispers.


Carlo is a certified instructor for Pilates Academy International, Core SuspendTM and GYROTONIC®. Here in Hong Kong he divides his time between teaching in the full- time program and in the Gifted Young Dancer Programme at the HKAPA and the newly opened Elevate Pilates and Movement Studios in Central, which he coowns and operates.

Biography: Iris Tang

In 2012, Iris graduated from the Degree program (the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours) in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (School of Dance) majoring in Ballet. She then completed the Certificate in Benesh Movement Notation in 2014 and accomplished the Diploma for Professional Benesh Movement Notators with Distinction in 2017.

With usage of Benesh Movement Notation, she worked with a few companies for different genre of production, such as creating of A-Capella Theatre Production with Yat Po Singers – Save the Next Song for Me (as Choreologist), Rock Hard (Re-run) (as Assistant Staging Director) and Requiem (a collaboration with City Contemporary Dance Company as Répétiteur); creating of Cantonese Opera with Orchestra and Chinese Dance performance – Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom with Yam Kim Fai and Pak Suet Sin Charitable Foundaion Limited (as choreologist) and All About Love with Hong Kong String Orchestra (as Rehearsal Assistant/ Project Coordinator); re-staging of a production based on the chapter “Practice of Purification” of the Sūtras – Hua-Yen Sutra/ Purification Practices with Zuni Icosahedron.
