Generating policy impact (GENIMP)

This short course consists of 2 four hour sessions that are designed to help academics undertaking policy-relevant research to develop a clear strategy for generating policy impact. A working knowledge of UK policy-making and evidence-based policy is assumed. The sessions are as follows:

Session 1: Policy-making and evidence

Wednesday 9th May 2018, 1pm – 5pm

In the first part of this session we draw on political science to look at different models of policy-making and their implications for researchers and research. We consider what counts as policy and what counts as policy change. In the second part of the session we look at the ways in which different types of research evidence are used in policy-making. Currently there is much emphasis on the use of Randomised Control Trials and longitudinal studies in evidence-based policy. We discuss this trend but also make a case for the importance of case-based and qualitative research.

Session 2: Getting evidence into policy and practice.

Wednesday 16th May 2018, 1pm – 5pm

In this session we first look at what existing research tells us about the effectiveness of different approaches to getting evidence into policy and practice. In the second half of the session participants draw on the learning from the short course to develop their own plan for generating policy impact.

Participants are expected to attend both sessions.
