Generation Sheffield: It's Not Always Easy, But...

Tuesday 23rd January 2018

5.30pm - 8.30pm

Room 12.3.18, Charles Street Building, 133 Charles St., Sheffield, S1 2ND

Starting and growing a business is never easy - sometimes it can be even more difficult. International students have to find their way through complex processes with unfamiliar terminology on top of Visa requirements and trading restrictions... but some do do it... and do it well!

Illness can also impact on start up plans... but again, adversity does create opportunity and it certainly instills a 'can do' mentality.

Speaking of adversity and 'can do'... after years of suppression and being told "you can't do it", its all the more powerful when you do 'do it' and do it  oh so impressively!

Tara Shad is a fashion designer and owner of online fashion boutique Crowd Capture! She will share how she has suffered from increased anxiety since school age. Her global travels with her family have helped her deal with these anxieties, helping her to expand her social network and uncovering a love of fashion. Tara has been supported by Prince's Trust Enterprise Programme and has had ambassadorial responsibilities with them - she is a regular speaker at public events creating awareness of Asperger Syndrome and how to become a business entrepreneur.

Elena Yang came to Sheffield from her home country of China in 2012 - she graduated in 2016 with a masters degree in graphic design. She was inspired by one of the tutors to 'do good by design' believing that the world needs much more than 'things that look good' - it needs designers, makers, and innovators who believe they are life changers! And Elena definitely is doing just that with her Brailler product. Battling through company law, IP registration new product design legislation etc and all in a foreign language has not been easy - plus of course, the necessary Visa requirements! But, she's doing it... and wants to share her story to encourage and inspire others because she knows it's worth it!

Danielle Wilkinson is our third panel member who can also first hand share a story of making it happen against the odds! After years of domestic violence and sexual abuse by her first husband, she managed to escape and rebuild her life. First gaining a business degree at Hallam she then went on to set up the regions only mobile spray tan and beauty parlour... I love a Dan Tan! She now employs a fleet of female spray technicians and operates across a wide geographical region. Oh and by the way, she's a mum of 3 too!

We're sure this inspirational panel will encourage you and no doubt inspire your own entrepreneurial journey in 2018. No matter what stage you're at, be it pre-start, early stages, or even growth, we know these stories of keeping going against all the odds wil give you the boost to make it happen for you in 2018!

We'll be there from 5.30pm onwards and look forward to seeing you there.
