Genesis P-orridge & a Very British Satanic Panic with Matthew Levi Stevens
Ever since Genesis P-Orridge and his bandmates in Throbbing Gristle were called "Wreckers of Civilization" in 1976 they had declared "Nothing Short ov a Total War" against mainstream culture.
Following further conflict with the authorities throughout subsequent projects, Psychic TV and the Temple ov Psychick Youth, it all came to a head in 1992 when P-Orridge and the Temple were attacked in the gutter press, falsely accused of Satanic Ritual Abuse in TV program 'Dispatches' and finally were raided by Scotland Yard, who seized something like two tonnes of archival and personal materials. As a consequence, fearing for their safety, the P-Orridge Family went in to self-imposed exile in the USA.
What were the various factors that contributed to this astounding turn of events? What were the consequences? And what was it really all about?
Join Matthew Levi Stevens, former associate of Genesis P-Orridge and Temple member, as he examines this shocking epsode in counter-culture history, still scarily relevant today.
Matthew Levi Stevens is the author of The Magical Universe of William S. Burroughs (Mandrake of Oxford, 2014) and various related texts, as well as a range of print and online articles for Beatdom, FANEmag, The Fenris Wolf 12, Furfur, Reality Sandwich, Soft Need 23, and others.
