The roundtable will bring novel insights on the topic of SOGIE asylum by challenging legal and academic representations of this group. The papers show how these representations are still often based on stereotypical assumptions and expectations of universal characteristics or life experiences among all LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers. Instead, the two interventions seek to bring out attention to intra-group differences among SOGIE asylees and refugees and non-Western conceptualisations of sexuality and gender identity. As such, the presentations importantly introduce new research agendas away from static understandings of SOGIE asylees as helpless victims fleeing oppressive countries and cultures in order to find freedom in the liberal ‘West’.

Speakers:

Professor Mengia Tschalär and Dr Nina Held - Recognizing Trauma in the Asylum Decision Process for Lesbian Women in Germany;

Dr Moira Dustin - Professing selves: sexuality, gender identity and refugee categories for Iranian exiles
