"Geographical Indications are exciting". If a search on Google for a proposition generates over half a million hits, there is probably something to it. Francis Gurry, Director-General of WIPO, predicts that GIs are set to dominate the IP scene there for the next 6 months. GIs protect €50bn sales annually and this is set to increase as more countries recognise the system, and as GIs spread beyond food and agricultural products.
Wolf Meier-Ewert has been a Counsellor in the Intellectual Property Division of the World Trade Organization for over 10 years, a role which has included administering TRIPS, and advising WTO Members and acceding countries on TRIPS.
Dev Gangjee is an Associate Professor in Intellectual Property at the University of Oxford and the Director of the Oxford Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice, and has written widely on GIs.
Wolf and Dev have kindly agreed to talk to AIPPI UK about the current status of GI protection and its future directions.
Sir Richard Arnold has kindly agreed to chair the event.
This course is directed at all levels of practitioners with an interest in intellectual property and will provide them with an understanding of GI law. We anticipate that there will be an opportunity for questions.
Drinks will be served afterwards
