Course fee: £300

For centuries, Muslim artists have used gold, ink, and brightly coloured paints to illuminate and beautify sacred manuscripts. Focusing on the fundamental role of geometry in manuscript illumination, students will construct and analyse several geometric manuscript patterns, choosing one to recreate as an illuminated page. This course will give students the opportunity to learn about traditional painting and gilding techniques used in Islamic manuscript illumination, including making and usage of shell gold and handmade watercolour paints. We will also look at the the artistic and historical context within which this art developed. Through learning about geometric patterns and using traditional skills and techniques from the Islamic world, each student will create a beautiful illuminated frontispiece.

Learning will be supported by illustrated talks, practical demonstrations, one-to-one tuition, and course handouts for students to keep. Students are asked to bring a good quality drawing compass to the course. Otherwise, all art materials, including gold leaf and pigments are covered in the course fee.

Classes take place in a new studio space in the beautiful town of Windsor, just a few minutes' walk from Windsor Castle and the River Thames.

Ayesha Gamiet: Art, Illustration and Design

My name is Ayesha Gamiet and I am an artist, illustrator and art educator, living and working in the South East of England. My work is inspired by traditional arts of the world and the beauty of nature. In 2018, I was awarded an ijaza (traditional apprenticeship) in Islamic manuscript illumination under Master illuminators Ayten Tiryaki and Çiçek Derman in Istanbul. I have a BA in African and Asian Art History and Archaeology from the University of London, and a Master’s Degree in Traditional and Islamic Arts. In 2014, I completed a second Master’s Degree in Education (with a focus on Art, Creativity and Culture in Education) at the University of Cambridge.

In 2018, I was commissioned by the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, to produce illuminated frontispieces for four volumes of poetry. One of these volumes was gifted to HM Queen Elizabeth II, and one to HRH Prince Charles. My work is also in the Royal Library collection at Windsor Castle.

My teaching experience includes training PGCE art and design teachers at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge; teaching at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace; and teaching on the Prince’s School’s educational programmes in London, Cairo, Jeddah, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. I have exhibited within the UK and internationally. My travels and experiences in the rich world of Islamic art continue to inspire and inform my work.
