About this event

Business West, in partnership with the Bristol Tbilisi Twinning Association and the Georgian Embassy, are delighted to invite you to a unique Georgian Wine Tasting which will be held at Leigh Court on Thursday 18th May 2023.

Celebrate the link between two cities over a delicious glass of wine

Bristol and Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, became twinned cities all the way back in 1988, and since then strong cultural, economic and individual links have been built between the two cities. As the story goes, the first suggestion that Bristol and Tbilisi should become twinned started as many great ideas do, in a bar.

This is especially fitting when you realise that Georgia is generally considered the ‘cradle of wine’, as it is the oldest wine producing region in the world, starting over 8000 years ago.

As a way of celebrating the link between Bristol and Tbilisi in Georgia, we are inviting our members to come and sample some fabulous wines, learn more about traditions that make the wine so unique, and enjoy each other’s company in the wonderful surroundings of Leigh Court.

What can I expect?

The event will begin with an introduction from representatives from Bristol Tbilisi Twinning Association and the Head of Mission from the Georgian Embassy, who will give you some background information about the link between Bristol and Tbilisi, and the reason why Georgia has an important place in the history of wine production.

You’ll then hear from two Masters of Wine from the Georgian wine company Gardabani, who will present you with a variety of their classic wines for you to taste, explaining the wines origins, how it’s produced and how you should drink it!

About the wines

Natural Georgian wines come in every colour on the sunshine spectrum: deep beaming shades of copper, spice, marmalade and gold make for the local category of ‘Amber Wines’. That is, macerated whites that can ferment for up to 8 or 9 months using a skin contact method in the qvevri. The result is potent wines with a mouth-grabbing fruit flavour that can hold a variety of notes like leather, pepper, toast or spice, all given by the natural grape.
