We are delighted to continue our German cinema series in cooperation with the Institut français d’Écosse in Edinburgh with a screening of The Theory of Everything (Die Theorie von Allem). With English subtitles.
Join us at the Institut français in Edinburgh for the screening of this atmospheric thriller set in the Swiss Alps, where science meets the surreal.
In 1962, the world’s leading physicists gather at a secluded congress in the Swiss Alps to discuss the elusive “Theory of Everything.” But as the search for universal truths unfolds, inexplicable events begin to disrupt the serene mountain setting. A suspenseful, visually stunning thriller about quantum mechanics, captured in breathtaking black-and-white cinematography.
The Magic Mountain for physicists: Young researcher Johannes Leinert travels with his doctoral advisor to the congress, where anticipation builds around a lecture by a renowned Iranian scientist. When the speaker’s arrival is mysteriously delayed, the distinguished guests pass the time skiing and socialising. Johannes, meanwhile, becomes drawn to Karin, a captivating bar pianist who seems to know unsettling details about his past.
Then the atmosphere shifts. Bodies appear and vanish. One physicist begins to age unnaturally. The clouds above the Alpine peaks twist into uncanny shapes. And Karin disappears. As Johannes begins to investigate, he’s joined by two eccentric Swiss inspectors, plunging deeper into a mystery that defies logic.
Blending noir aesthetics with echoes of cinematic history, Die Theorie von Allem is a haunting, intellectually charged thriller that explores the fragile fabric of space-time.
