Surveys

Join us for hands-on wildlife surveys focused on the fascinating, and elusive, German Hairy Snail (Pseudotrichia rubiginosa). This small but important species is a key indicator of healthy habitats.

During the survey, you’ll:

  • Learn how to identify the German Hairy Snail and its unique features.
  • Take part in fieldwork, recording sightings and collecting ecological data.
  • Contribute to conservation efforts by helping monitor the species’ population and distribution.

This survey is explorative, our main aim is to identify its distribution across different habitats.

Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about the hidden world of snails, this is a great opportunity to connect with nature, develop field survey skills, and support local biodiversity.

Duke's Hollow

Duke’s Hollow is one of just two surviving sections of natural riverbank along the Thames in London. This Local Nature Reserve features a sequence of habitats, starting with the shingle foreshore and moving through wet alder–willow woodland to drier willow stands further up the slope. The tide floods the hollow twice daily, with the depth of water varying throughout the year.

What to bring:

  • OLD CLOTHES – that you don’t mind getting dirty - preferably long sleeves and trousers.
  • COAT - you never know when it might rain
  • SUN CREAM - with temperatures high, this is important
  • WELLIES or TRAINERS – or just shoes you don't mind getting dirty
  • WATER - again, with temperatures high, this is important
  • LUNCH - this will not be provided
