Event description

Description

THE ANNUAL GERS (Government Expenditure and Revenue Scotland ) numbers provoke many interpretations and violent disagreement. 2017 was no different.

The Scottish Government and SNP celebrated Scotland’s notional deficit dropping by £1.3bn, along with the fastest increase in onshore revenues since consistent records began.

Unionists argue the remaining notional deficit would demand eye-watering austerity in any independent Scotland.

Ahead of another independence referendum, blind faith and assertion do nothing to persuade.

Are we too wee, too poor and too stupid to be an independent country?

Ask Dr Craig Dalzell, chief researcher at Scottish think-tank Commonweal.

He is author of Commonweal’s major report arguing an independent Scotland could achieve 'deficit parity' with the rest of the UK without cutting public services by rebudgeting.

The report, ‘Beyond GERS: Scotland’s fiscal position post-independence’ can be read in full here
