About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

This live, virtual training event will be delivered via Microsoft Teams. The training event will last 1 hour 30 mins and is also repeated on Thursday 13 June 2024 1.00pm - 2.30pm.

This is an EY Communication and Language Communities of Practice event - open to all.

Note, enrolment for Confident Communicators means tickets to this event are complimentary as subsidised by Early Years professional development monies (DfE), and you will receive an invitation email separately.

Ever wonder why infants behave the way they do? Are you working with children who don't use the gestures and facial expressions you would expect?

This is an amazing opportunity to learn from our expert, Mary Gavin - Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist - who will take you through this introduction to gestures.

You will deepen your knowledge in:

  • Understanding of what is and is not a gesture.
  • Understanding of the different functions of gestures.
  • Understanding the developmental sequence of gestures in neurotypical children and atypical gestures observed with autistic children.

IMPORTANT! for all courses please read.

Please note that one ticket purchased equates to one participant attending, NOT one setting.

Please DO NOT share the link, nor attend if you have not purchased a ticket.

When booking your ticket, please ensure your correct name and email address is accurately inputted when Eventbrite asks you to enter the details for ‘Ticket 1’ as this is where all details, possibly any handouts and the link to the training is sent.

On the day before the training, a register is taken from the Eventbrite booking list and this will be checked at the virtual training event by looking at the participant list. Anyone not on the register, therefore having not purchased a ticket will be removed from the Teams meeting.

Delivery Information:

This course will take place via Microsoft Teams, as this is accessible on PCs, tablets and smartphones. However, please ensure your device has been updated to the latest version/software, as some participants are experiencing issues caused by outdated software/operating system. If you use a phone or tablet the quality and accessibility of videos and functionality of the PowerPoint may be affected. On Teams, the chat function might not work. For the best experience we advise you to use a laptop/desktop PC.

The direct link to join the live session will usually be included in the ORIGINAL confirmation email sent from Eventbrite when you complete the booking – this confirmation email is sent to the email address you enter for the ticket holder, usually within 5 minutes of placing an order. Please check with the person who will be attending the session that they have received this email and can see the link to join at least 2 days prior to the session. At this point, please contact cs.eys@derbyshire.gov.uk if you cannot find/see the link to join so we have time to rectify this. Subsequent emails sent from Eventbrite are reminders only and may not include the link to join.

Please log on and ‘join’ the live session 10 minutes prior to course commencement, this is to ensure the course starts on time and without disruption. Sometimes this might be entering a waiting room. It is a delegate’s responsibility to ensure they can see, hear and be seen and heard before the course start time. Trainers will take a register before the course starts, therefore once the session has started you may be refused entry due to the disruption this causes for other learners.

If another delegate will be attending instead of those originally booked on, please amend this on Eventbrite, and if this is short notice, please email cs.eys@derbyshire.gov.uk so we can amend our register before the course begins. Additionally, to support the trainer in completing the course register can we please ask delegates to type in your name and the name of your place of work into the chat to help the trainer identify who is attending the course. Please could Childminders please add CM to the end of your name. If you cannot access the chat, the trainer may ask if you are in attendance.

To support delivery, cameras and microphones will sometimes need to be off. However, during the delivery some courses have interactive discussions / tasks, so please contribute and take part in full during these times.

By signing up to this course you are providing your consent to the email address you provide at the point of booking being shared with the training provider to enable the trainer to contact you regarding this specific course, if required.

Booking and Cancellation Policy:

For all courses and events, this includes both free training and events, and those with a booking charge:

*Places can still be cancelled on Eventbrite, with refunds offered, up to 30 days prior to the course/event taking place if you know that you are unable to attend. If you need to cancel your place on ANY course, within 30 days of the course starting, please email cs.eys@derbyshire.gov.uk so we can amend our register, and possibly offer the place to another person should there be a waiting list.

*Unfortunately, we are unable to offer any refund if you cancel a place after the 30 days cancellation offer has ended.

Non-Attendance:

If a delegate does not attend, including FREE training, and we have not been informed, this will be noted and we may get in touch with you about future bookings. To ensure the Early Years Team are able to continue to offer subsidised training and sometimes free training, we ask you to please be respectful of this. We often have waiting lists, and non-attendance prevents others from attending.

Unfortunately, we may have to consider charging a nominal fee for FREE courses and increasing our very competitive prices on all other training if this continues to be an issue.

Thank you for your support in this matter as this will enable us to continue to offer a wide range of training opportunities at a competitive price for all.

Please email cs.eys@derbyshire.gov.uk for any further information.
