The art of storytelling, from stage to screen
After years of using film projection and technology as a storytelling tool in stage adaptations, as a response to the pandemic lockdown, Franko Figueiredo from StoneCrabs Theatre set up the pilot project 'Islands That Shape Us', a programme where young people have an opportunity to explore the art of storytelling from a theatre making perspective and are inspired to transfer existing skills and mentored to produce their own short films. Watch one of the shorts they have recently produced, and hear Franko talk out about the project's challenges and successes.
Biography
StoneCrabs Island Young Creatives programme works with young people who have existing theatre-making skills, transferring them into making films. Participants are taught script-to-screen development and production skills. With a small budget and technical support, they produce their own short film. The programme seeks to place underrepresented voices and untold stories centre stage and provide enriching accessible cultural experiences that engages with our communities.
Why are we running this networking event?
Today the Solent Region sits at a crossroads. The sheer intensity of the creative industries in the region is already driving the growth of jobs and graduate opportunities. Meanwhile, the scale of investment in film and high budget television production around the west of London, an area geographically adjacent to Solent, will soon result in the development of the largest production base in Europe.
We really do have an opportunity here!
We invite you to contribute to a conversation about what we as a region need to do to leverage these opportunities and to maximise the potential for growth for film production, creative industries and related supply chains. We want to know your ideas, hear your voice and get your thinking on how we can change up and catalyse what is already happening in the region.
Let’s Make Waves – Changing the Landscape for the Solent’s Film Industry
Researchers at Solent University are running a series of networking events across the region that will not only be an opportunity to connect with others in the sector but will also serve to capture a vision for the future. There will be pizza, refreshments, and plenty of networking plus a poster cruising activity to capture your ideas.
We welcome anyone from the film industry, the creative industries more generally or anyone involved in related supply chains. We look forward to meeting you all and starting a conversation how we change the landscape for film production in the Solent region.
