Get Started: Big Ideas – LGBTQI+ asylum seekers in the UK
Event Information
About this Event
In this lecture, for LGBT History Month, we'll be joined by Claire Fletcher, a former Birkbeck Master's student and current PhD candidate at University College London, who is researching the experiences of queer asylum seekers.
Due to the levels of persecution, harassment and violence LGBTQI+ people still experience all around the world, there is a need for LGBTQI+ people to seek safety in countries other than their own. In the UK, asylum claims based on sexual identity first came under recognised refugee protection in 1999. However, LGBTQI+ people face unique barriers in seeking asylum in the UK, which will be explored in this talk.
*lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and/or intersex
