This practical and supportive workshop is designed for complete beginners or those who feel unsure about using a sewing machine. Whether you're preparing to join a sewing and dressmaking course or simply want to build your confidence, this session will help you feel more comfortable and in control behind your own machine.

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Understand the key parts and functions of a sewing machine
  • Feel confident setting up, threading, and operating their machine
  • Be able to sew simple stitches with accuracy
  • Be prepared to begin a sewing and dressmaking course with confidence

Workshop Contents:

Introduction

  • Welcome and tutor introduction
  • Overview of the session
  • Brief discussion about participants’ experience and goals

Understanding Your Sewing Machine

  • Identifying parts of the sewing machine: bobbin, presser foot, tension dial, stitch selector, etc.
  • Explanation of key functions and what they do
  • How to set up your machine safely

Threading Basics

  • How to wind a bobbin and load it correctly
  • Threading the upper thread step-by-step
  • Common troubleshooting tips for threading issues

Getting Started with Stitches

  • How to select and change stitches
  • Adjusting stitch length and width
  • Practice stitching in straight lines, curves, and corners on scrap fabric

Sewing Skills Practice

  • Guided practice: sewing simple seams and finishing edges
  • Learning how to backstitch and pivot
  • Exploring different fabric types and how they affect stitching

Questions, Troubleshooting & Confidence Building

  • Addressing individual questions or machine issues
  • Practical tips for home sewing
  • Advice on what to bring and expect in the full Sewing and Dressmaking course

Will I have to provide anything?

You will need to bring along the following items;

  • Your sewing machine
  • Scrap fabric to work on, preferably plain, light coloured, cotton or linen
  • An assortment of coloured threads.
  • Scissors, needles, sewing machine

Am I ready to start?

As soon as you have your machine, fabric and thread, you are ready. If you need further advice before the start of the course please make contact with the college.
