For anyone fortunate enough to have never had a baby in the NICU let us share some hard truths about why we are fundraising for the Neonatal Ward in our Princess Royal Maternity and what the money we are raising will go towards buying.
🪑 Chairs - in January 2025 there where only TWO functioning, reclining, soft armchairs shared between three rooms in the NICU ward. Staff in the rooms moved the chairs from room to room when they where empty trying to make parents as comfortable as possible. The alternative chairs which are in the majority are hard, plastic chairs with no arm rests. The kind you get in the waiting areas. Each room has 4/6 babies. That’s 16 new mothers trying to nurse a sick baby on a hard plastic chair. 16 new mothers trying to bond with a sick baby on a hard plastic chair. 16 new mothers, who have just gone through childbirth watching over their sick baby with no comfortable place to rest.
🍼 Bottle Warmers - in January 2025 there was a cupboard full of bottle warmers. All broken. Staff in the NICU where having to share ONE bottle warmer between 3 separate rooms. That’s 16 babies all waiting for one bottle warmer. That’s staff having to go to a different room to heat a bottle. That is unnecessary stress that is easily avoidable.
🛏️ Bedding - in January 2025 the NICU had a shortage of clean baby bedding. The amazing staff, as always, improvised. To make sure the baby had a clean bed an Adult pillowcase was used in place of a cot sheet. Improvisations staff should not have to make.
Anyone who has had a baby in the NICU will tell you that the nurses are real life Angels. Working 12 hour shifts and they go above and beyond. Anything we can do to make the NICU more comfortable and less stressful for Nurses, parents and Babies is the Goal for this fundraiser!
