Description

About the course

At Inspiration Trust, our primary curriculum is founded on the understanding that excellent writing develops from the specific knowledge and vocabulary which our pupils acquire through their study of a wide range of subject knowledge.

A knowledge-rich primary curriculum provides many fantastic opportunities for pupils to produce creative, informative, interesting and detailed writing. Writing tasks can be based upon the subject knowledge itself, rather than generic skills that are detached from specific content.

The course will examine the underpinning theory which supports this approach to teaching writing in primary schools, and will go on to provide specific examples of how this can be applied through challenging and fulfilling tasks that exceed national expectations.

Who should attend?

This course is for anyone looking for a fresh, evidence-based approach to teaching writing at primary level. It would be useful for classroom practitioners and senior leaders alike.

The tutors

Dr Anthony Radice read literature at Manchester University, achieving first class honours, before going on to study for a master’s degree at Leeds, followed by a doctoral thesis on American poetry. While completing his thesis, he trained as a teacher through the forerunner to SCITT, the Graduate Teacher Programme. He has worked in a wide range of schools, both state and independent. As head of English at an independent school in London, he pioneered a rigorous, chronological approach to teaching English. Through his blog, ‘The Traditional Teacher’, he has made a strong case for the emancipatory power of a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum delivered through high-quality didactic teaching. He firmly believes that it is through these means that all pupils, of every background, can achieve success.

Steve Mastin is subject specialist leader for history at the Inspiration Trust. He has worked in the state sector for 17 years, beginning his career in an independent boarding school. As an experienced head of department, Steve produced his own textbooks to ensure a knowledge-rich curriculum was delivered throughout KS3, beginning with depth studies of ancient history in Year 7. He has written for various educational journals and an A-Level textbook, trained history teachers for the University of Cambridge, the Ministry of Education in Singapore and worked with new and experienced teachers in Kazakhstan for many years. Steve has also advised the Department of Education on the history curriculum in England and is a regular speaker at history conferences.

Sarah Buckley is Vice Principal at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy where she leads Teaching and Learning, Assessment and the development of Trainee teachers. She is currently developing the primary knowledge - based curriculum in her school and leads on writing moderation at Key Stage 2 for the Trust.
Sarah works alongside the Inspiration Trust Subject Specialist Leaders to ensure all resources have the maximum impact for learning. She has delivered CPD and training for new and experienced teachers across Norfolk.
Sarah has taught across the whole of the primary phase in some of the most challenging schools in Norfolk for the past nine years after having worked across five counties in England. In addition she has worked in Service Children’s Education in Germany, Cyprus and in Australia.
