Event description

Description

The General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) is a new EU Regulation that will harmonise and update the law in respect of how businesses deal with personal data.

Personal data is any data which relates to a living individual who can be identified from that data. Good examples are emails addresses and mobile numbers. Any UK business that stores, uses or in any way deals with personal data must comply with the GDPR. Given all businesses have employees, customers and/or suppliers it is hard to think of a type of UK business that does not process at least some personal data and must therefore comply with the GDPR.

The GDPR comes into force on 25th May 2018. It is a myth that Brexit will stop the implementation of the GDPR despite its EU origins.

Once the GDPR is in force, any failure to comply with it could lead to regulatory enforcement by the Information Commissioners Office (“ICO”), which could include a fine of up to £20m. The extent of losses from a PR perspective for such non-compliance is impossible to measure.

This Humphreys Law presentation will provide you with the insight into the steps your business must take in the coming months to ensure compliance with the GDPR. Whilst May next year seems a long way off, for many businesses the work they have to do to achieve compliance requires immediate attention.
