Description

Getting started with the GOV.UK Prototype Kit

Level

Introductory

Who it’s for
Anyone working in government who would like to learn how to build working HTML prototypes with the GOV.UK Prototype Kit. You don’t need any coding experience to attend.

Designers who have attended Designer Induction: how to be a designer in government and are new to the GOV.UK Prototype Kit or new to code should attend this course.

Contractors currently employed with government are welcome to join.

What you’ll learn
You’ll get a basic introduction to HTML and CSS, learn how to get started with the Prototype Kit, and how to create and link pages. You’ll also learn how to pass user data around your prototype, how to create routes and how to publish a prototype using GitHub and Heroku.

What you’ll need
A laptop to use on the day. You’ll need to install some software before coming – we’ll send an email with details before the day. Some software requires admin permission so you may need to get your IT team to install it for you.

Getting there
There is no car parking available on-site. There are National Car Park (NCP) car parks nearby. This will be your own responsibility to find car parking spaces.

The Ofsted building entrance is called Piccadilly Gate and is next to Piccadilly Station car park at the back of the station. This entrance has large escalators, with no other way of getting down the stairs.

An accessible ground-level entrance to the building is on Store Street. Accessible toilets are on the same corridor as the event room. We will be on the ground floor for the entire day.

The easiest route to the office from Piccadilly station is to take the exit next to Platform 1, walk 20 seconds across the car park and you will see Picaddily in the building. So many visitors end up getting lost trying to use the store street entrance.

On the day

Arrive before 9:45am ready for a 10:00 start and we will finish at 5pm.

Please bring your cross-government passes with them. If you bring your pass, you will not need to get another pass from the desk. Upon arrival, please give your name to the Reception staff who will direct you to the room.

Lunch will be at 12:30 for approximately an hour and there will be a short break in the morning and afternoon. Lunch will not be provided. All attendees can access the PG café area via corridor leading from the meeting rooms area. You do not need to provide a pass. Tap water will be provided in the rooms for all three days.

You must commit to the whole day. If you are unable to attend for the whole day, please let us know. We prefer not to have people leave early, start late or drop in and out of the day as it is unfair to the other group members and people on the waiting list.
