Dear Research Student,

Congratulations on joining the University of Portsmouth to complete your research degree, we hope you are looking forward to starting with us in October. This e-mail is to invite you to attend the university-wide 'Getting started with your research' event on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th October, 2017. This year the event will take place in the Portsmouth Historical Dockyard, Action Stations venue.

Please find below a full programme for the two day event. You must sign-up to attend both days (DAY 1 & DAY 2) and bring your tickets with you either printed or on your mobile device so we can register you as attended.

This two day event is compulsory for all new postgraduate research degree students (PGRs) so please make every effort to attend.

This is a very important event for you as it:

  • Introduces you to the knowledge, resources and software necessary to manage your research training

  • Introduces you to members of staff who will be important to you as a PGR at the University of Portsmouth

  • Gives you an opportunity to meet other PGRs from across the University

  • Provides you with an overview of the doctoral process and how best to manage it

  • Highlights the support you will receive as a PGR

Additionally you are required to attend your faculty induction event, these are taking place on -

Creative and Cultural Industries - Tuesday 3rd October, 11:00am - 13:00pm in Eldon West building, room 1.02

Humanities and Social Sciences - Monday 2nd October 9am - 12:00pm, Park building room 2.09, there will also be ID checking that afternoon for HUMSS students. You are also invited to the Faculty Postgraduate Conference on Tuesday 3rd October 2017, please contact your faculty for more information.

Business and Law - Tuesday 3rd October, location and timings to be confirmed

Science - Friday 6th October, 10am - 2pm, The Graduate School, St Andrews Court (room number 4.09).

Technology - Tuesday 7th February, 1pm start: Dennis Sciama (room number 2.08).

This year we will also be organising a social event on the Wednesday evening (the 4th of October) for you to get to know your fellow PGR's in a more informal setting and meet members of the Graduate School team. We will be heading down to the Old Custom's House, Gunwharf Quays around 7pm for drinks. We will communicate further details closer to the time, but please do confirm if you are interested in attending the evening social when registering.
