Event description
'Getting To Grips With Spec Fic: Speculative Fiction writing from Science Fiction to Fantasy' with William Breden at NWS this November!

About this event

Speculative fiction is a broad category of fiction that encompasses a number of different genres. What ties them together is that the speculative elements in the stories are based on conjecture - and do not exist in the real world. It's often argued that speculative fiction allows a writer more breadth and depth to explore imagined worlds without being "pigeon-holed" into a specific genre category i.e. science-fiction. William Breden's course aims to give writers an overview of the speculative fiction genre and will serve as an introduction or a refresher to prospective writers of science fiction and fantasy.

During the workshop, writers will be encouraged to consider the creation of new worlds and the people (or things) that inhabit them. It will enable participants to look at technology with new eyes and consider how setting can be as important as character.

This is a course for writers of prose or poetry to consider the magic and the marvellous and how to capture them on the page.

There will be a focus on practical exercises and feedback and at the conclusion of the course, each writer should have some ideas and early drafts ready for further development.

Within the two hour session, the following areas will be covered and each student will be supported to produce work to help embed that learning:

  • Genre
  • World-building
  • Technology and Magic
  • Narrative structure and poetic themes
  • Writing the alien
