Event description

Description

Despite being the most used programming language, JavaScript is often misunderstood; treated as a necessary evil rather than celebrated for its vital role in shaping the web as we know it. However, in the last ten years developments such as jQuery, Backbone, and Angular have slowly but surely brought JavaScript back into fashion. Now an enjoyable and desirable language to work with, there’s never been a better time to pick up a few basics!

JavaScript can and has been used in various ways - in games, chat clients, apps - but this course will focus on JavaScript in its overwhelmingly most common role within the web browser. You will not only learn the fundamentals of the language, but how to apply them practically through a series of small projects designed to mimic the day-to-day uses that working engineers put them to.

Lesson 1 - What Makes the Web Work? | 18th October 6-8pm

We’ll get started with and introduction to the web and the technologies that make it look and respond the way we’re so familiar with. Starting with the very basics, these are the foundations for what we’ll cover in the next 5 weeks. You’ll learn a bit of CSS and HTML, and how to get javascript into a web page, as well as meeting two of the most fundamental building blocks of JavaScript - the variable, and the function.

Lesson 2 - Listen Carefully | 25th October 6-8pm

Now that you know some basics, the goal for this session is to convince you of JavaScripts usefulness in making web pages which can respond and react quickly to user behaviour - by covering events, listeners, and objects.

Lesson 3 - Operation 'If Else' |  1st November  6-8pm

Coding is all about solving problems using patterns and logic. So, most coding languages worth their salt have a version of the logical loops and operators that we’ll learn in this session - ‘If… else’, ‘while’, ‘for’, and an excuse to use the word ‘ampersand’.

Lesson 4 - Who Doesn’t Love a Library? | 8th November 6-8pm

JavaScript’s been around for a while now. A lot of very clever people have done a lot of very impressive things with it. There’s no need to be intimidated, just benefit from their work using libraries! In this session you’ll learn what libraries are in a JavaScript context, how to use them, and get introduced to one or two that you might find really handy

Lesson 5 - Don’t Make me Call the Server | 15th November 6-8pm

Ajax - warrior, toilet cleaner, and… ? Some say the turning point in the history of JavaScript came when AJAX was introduced. It’s been making the web faster and more responsive ever since, and is a staple in any JavaScript developer’s coding practices. In this session you’ll learn what Ajax is, why it’s so useful, how to call an API and how to trade JSON data objects with your besties.

Lesson 6 - Finale | 22nd November 6-8pm

Let’s tie all of this together in one final practical demonstration, shall we? There may even be a pop-quiz. Stay sharp!
