Description

“Beyond Margins” GFEST 2016 Visual Arts Exhibition Private View:

GFEST 2016 Eight visual artists explore the theme of marginalised and ‘out and proud’ LGBTQI identities in complimenting or contrasting views in their works.

I Am For You Can Enjoy is a multimedia collaboration between Ajamu X and Khalil West. The film installation challenges definitions of “Blackness” and “sex work(er)” based in failure and victimhood.

Jason Carr’s figurative paintings series engages the viewer to look at contemporary spectrum of LGBTQI narratives offering varying insights into the most inner self.

Jose Gomez’s paintings celebrate the form and sensuality of men’s bodies and their ‘fresh’ flesh. They confront homoerotic fetishism and Catholic religious beliefs.

Niranjan Kamatkar: presents Marg (pathway), a photographic series which looks at 4 narratives from Indian epic Mahabharata exploring the ageless nature of gender fluidity and sexual diversity. This is twinned with the GFEST 2016 performance Marg choreographed by Subodh Rathod.

Sarah Jane Moon’s portraits of peoplewho identify as lesbian and / or queer, compelling the viewer to think about the differences between ‘marginal and mainstream identities’.

Simon Croft presents Normal, Natural, Real, text based conceptual work looking at notions often used in relation to trans people’s bodies and identities.

Veronica Slater’s porcelain sculptures and mixed media collage works documents an inner visual diary and seeking to find the self. It deals with being OUT and looking into the margins.
