Event description

Description

Want to learn some simple coding skills, and create a fab object that can decorate your house over the winter season? Come to our Internet of Things workshop - learn to write a simple program, and build a light-up Christmas tree which is internet-enabled and changes colour when you tweet it.

The workshop costs £28 including a Raspberry Pi Zero W starter kit (RRP £35) and all the parts for your tree, and we’ll talk you through the basics of setting up your tiny computer, building it into a laser cut Christmas tree and programming it to respond to input from Twitter. The workshop takes around 2 hours and will include all materials (you can take your finished project home with you) plus our usual tea/coffee/cake.

We’ll be hosted by our lovely friends at Trafford FabLab, which is directly opposite the tram stop at Altrincham, and parking is available in the shopping centre nearby. We’ll aim to start at 2pm, and will be open from 1.30pm so you can arrive and get a cuppa before we start. The FabLab is wheelchair accessible and vegan/gluten free food options will be available.

If you're keen to carry on with this kind of project, we're aiming to run another workshop in the Easter holidays and another in the summer, both of which will use the same Pi Zero W kit, so you can bring your kit back and participate in those workshops using the same equipment.

Huge thanks to Pimoroni for their support with this workshop!
