Event description

Description

In this workshop we will chant, explore the history, ideas and practices of haṭha yoga through the lens of the Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā. This workshop is open to all and no prior knowledge is required. Sections of the text and snacks will be provided. All you need to bring is inquisitiveness. If you would like to look at the full text before the session please get hold of James Mallinson’s The Gheranda Samhita published in 2004 by YogaVidya.com.

‘There is no fetter like illusion, no force greater than Yoga, no friend greater than knowledge, and no enemy greater than ego’ Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā 1.4. The Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā is ‘the most enclyclopedic of all the root texts of Hatha Yoga’. Rather than haṭha yoga it describes itself as ghaṭastha yoga. Ghaṭa, pot or person, refers to the techniques as working on the body and mind. The text gives us a sevenfold path to perfection of the person – aṭkarma, āsana, mudrā, pratyāhāra, prāṇāyāma, dhyāna and samādhi. Richly elaborate visualisations bring vivid colour to the practices: ‘The yogi should visualize a sublime ocean of nectar in his heart, with an island of jewels in its middle whose sand is made of gemstones’ Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā 6.2.
