The North of England’s premier collection of aviation history with over 30 aircraft on display. On the site of the former RAF Usworth/Sunderland Airport between Washington and Sunderland.
It opened in 1916 and by 1939 it had a runway and resident fighter squadrons. It was attacked by the Luftwaffe in 1940 and for the next 2 years, the fighters spent a great deal of time fighting off German night raids.
After the war the airfield was converted to a training base and became a civil airfield where air displays were held from 1962.
The airfield closed in 1984, most of the land was sold to Nissan for their car manufacturing plant on the condition that part of the land was handed over to enthusiasts to display the old aircraft and other items of aviation history.
