About this event
This spacious abandoned Grade II listed building is steeped is history with a plethora of reported activity.Inside, it is littered with broken beds, commodes and trollies from its time spent as a hospital.
After originally being built as an orphanage for seamen’s children, it was later converted into a hospital, with a focus on patients with mental health issues.
On the top floor, an attic is lined with cupboards – which were used as ‘naughty’ cupboards to lock misbheaving children inside.
The winding staircases come with ‘anti-suicide’ grills and lead to seemingly endless treatment rooms and laundry rooms.
In 1879, a sanatorium was erected on the site, before finally turning into Newsham Park Hospital in 1954.
