Location History:

Built in 1581,Shaw House is one of the best preserved Elizabethan mansions in England.
However, a previous manor which dated back to the 13th century, once stood just north-west of the present mansion and was still used as out buildings well into the 20th century.
Over the centuries the House has welcomed royalty, seen action during the Civil War, housed soldiers during World War II and schooled generations of local children.
During the Civil War,the house was attacked by the Earl of Manchester as a diversionary tactic, as the rest of the Parliamentary army, under William Waller, marched north to outflank the Royalists at Speen in the west. There was bloody fighting in both villages and, at what became known as the Second Battle of Newbury, each side lost about five hundred men.
The house cellars are said to have been used as dungeons for soldiers captured during the siege.
During World War II ,Shaw House was requisitioned by the War Office to serve as accommodation for troops. But it would soon fulfill a new role. On 20 February 1944 a German air raid hit Newbury and inflicted heavy damage on the town. One of the German bombs hit the local council school, killing several students and completely destroying the building. The school was moved to Shaw House as a temporary measure. In this case ‘temporary’ lasted 40 years, for the school continued after the war and only came to an end in 1983 when the house was declared unsafe.

Bright blue balls of light are frequently seen, emitting from the upper window of the attic when there’s no one inside.
The screams of a former house maid are said to echo from a tunnel, which reportedly runs between Shaw House to nearby Donnington Castle. It is said that she was tragically killed when the tunnel collapsed.
The sound of marching has been heard coming from within the building, and visitors have also reported the feeling of being watched when they have been alone inside.
Shaw House has seen many uses over it’s extensive history, which is why it comes as no surprise when this place is described as being one of the most haunted locations in Berkshire.
