Event description

Description

Ghost signs walking tour around the wonderful and curious streets of Deritend and Digbeth hunting for ghost signs whilst also taking in the street art which adds another fascinating layer to the streetscape. We will take in the history of the buildings and seek out a number of curious objects which tell us something about the history of Birmingham including the Temples of Relief. We will also take a short ramble down a bit of the canal which is a good way to enjoy this area as a group. On a good day, we will get great views over towards the city centre.

Ghost signs are old advertising signs hand-painted directly onto a buildings brickwork. They provide an ongoing glimpse back to the past. Put simply it's - history written on the walls for us all to see and enjoy.

The walk includes a guided tour with the history of each of the ghost signs explored as well as an opportunity to take in the wider culture and heritage of the area whilst we walk through.

The walk takes around 3 hours as we weave our way through the street and is mainly flat. Its suitable for people with good mobility due to the need to walk across a large urban area.

The walk is aimed at people who are interested in Birmingham's architecture, history, typography, street art and street photography or you just want to get out meet people and have a walk.

At the end of the walk, there is an optional offer to have a drink and chat as a group in one of the local bars or pubs by the Custard Factory. You will be able to purchase refreshments and hopefully join us for a well-deserved drink (refreshments not included in tour price).

The walk takes place whatever the weather and are flat shoes are recommended.

The meeting point is at the furthest end of Bradford Street from the city centre by the 'Bradford Street' sign on the junction where it meets Warner Street opposite the Adam & Eve Pub.
