Event description

Description

Christmas is traditionally a time for spectres and spirits, superstitions, and sinister stories. Join Georgian Lady Mrs. Leach at the close of the Christmas season - on the eve of the Twelfth Day - for true tales by candlelight, of customs and beliefs surrounding death, the afterlife, the spiritual, and the supernatural, in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Through local evidence, and a range of other archaeological and historical sources, discover how beliefs affected treatment of the corpse, and how superstitions and magical rites involving the human body and related artefacts, brought together the living, the dead, and otherworld forces, for protection, divination, and malice.

This talk takes place as part of a series of ‘Age of Austen’ events from July 2017 – July 2018, which mark the bicentenary of Jane Austen’s death. Antiquarian ‘Mrs. Leach’ (Dr Kirsten Jarrett, ACIfA), integrates original research to explore every day experiences in the Late Georgian and Regency era, particularly in Derbyshire.

Please note: some may find content upsetting; replica human skeletal remains and other funerary and mortuary material may be incorporated within the talk; not suitable for children: see FAQs for more information.

There are only a small number of places available for the event, which will last between an hour and one hour and a half, including discussion and opportunities to view and handle artefacts and other historical material.
