Where and When?

The Giant Coastal Challenge walk takes place on Saturday 23rd September 2017 and will start at Carrick-a-Rede, near Ballintoy and will finish at the world famous Giant’s Causeway.

Why take part?

Cancer Fund for Children is the leading local children's cancer charity in Northern Ireland, providing support to children and young people diagnosed with cancer and their families. Vital services include the provision of Cancer Fund for Children Specialists, one to one support, therapeutic short breaks and grants to ease the financial burden of looking after a sick child.

One of our therapeutic centres is on the north coast. Families can avail of a private short break at our cosy self-catering cottages, Pine, Birch and Oak just outside Coleraine. The cottages are the perfect choice for some private quality time together for exhausted families who are coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis.

“As a family we really enjoyed our stay in this tranquil place. It was a time to recharge our batteries after a very stressful time. The break at Pine Cottage meant more than others may appreciate. It is an essential service that to me is as important as all the medical assistance we have received.” Stephen, Dad

By taking part in our Giant Coastal Challenge event, you are literally offering these families a lifeline of support. Thank you.

How do I get there?

Due to restrictions on parking at both Carrick-a-Rede and the Giants Causeway, all participants MUST park their vehicles and register for the event at Dunluce School in Bushmills. Coaches will then take all event participants to start the walk at Carrick-a-Rede.

Registration will take place in the grounds of Dunluce School, Bushmills. The address is 16 Dunluce Road, Bushmills, BT57 8QQ.

Registration for the walk will be open from 9am until 10am. The first shuttle bus will depart for Carrick-a-Rede at approximately 10am and the walk will begin at 10:15am.

How long will the walk be?

The walk is approximately 10 miles along the coastline Ulster Way. The duration of the walk is dependent on ability but we estimate it will take an average of about 4-5 hours for most participants.

Unfortunately, the route is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs / mobility scooters as there are numerous stiles.

Who can take part?

This is a challenging walk and participants should have a good level of fitness and some experience of walking long distances over challenging terrain. Anyone over the age of 14 can take part and all walkers under 18 years MUST be accompanied by an adult. Due to health and safety reasons, dogs are not permitted.

How much does it cost to register?

A registration fee of £20 secures your place. We also ask each participant to raise a minimum sponsorship of £80 and would encourage participants to try and raise as much as possible to support our services. Why not get your friends, colleagues or family together and fundraise as a group?

What do I receive when I register?

We are here to support you every step of the way! Once registered, you will receive a fundraising pack which will include:

  • Welcome letter and further information about the event
  • A fundraising guide including hints and tips
  • Sponsorship forms
  • Guide to setting up an online giving page
  • Information about our services and how we help local families
  • A poster which you can use to let people know what you are doing
  • Training guidelines

You will also receive full support from a dedicated member of our Fundraising Team and can get fundraising materials from us, such as buckets, posters, stickers, balloons etc. should you decide to hold a fundraising event like a coffee morning

What do I wear or bring on the day?

All participants MUST wear hiking shoes or boots on the day - trainers are not suitable for the terrain and especially with our four seasons in one day weather.

A warm coat and even waterproof gear is recommended as well. However, you may also need to bring your sunscreen and insect spray! J All participants should bring a packed lunch and water too.

What do I get for taking part?

We are delighted to offer all participants of this event the opportunity to visit the new Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre on completion of the walk!

Inside you will have access to their fascinating exhibition illuminating both the science and stories of the Causeway, the café, toilet facilities and souvenir shop. Some of you might even want to visit the more familiar basalt columns for a few pictures and audio guides are also included with your entry.

You will also receive a bottle of water and snacks at the midway point, and a certificate to acknowledge your wonderful achievement.
