Gifford Community Woods was purchased by the local community in April 2017 with the support of the Scottish Land Fund and various other donations. It is an approximately 55 acre woodland near the East Lothian village of Gifford and comprises mixed and plantation woods on an ancient woodland site.
The Gifford Community Land Company is seeking to restore the area to native woodland supporting broad biodiversity which will be an asset to the local community now, and for generations to come.
On this visit we will be clearing non-native rhododendron stands to help with regeneration of the woodland. Note that much of the large leafy stands have already been cut down, and most effort will now be spent on finding and uprooting small regenerating shoots and removing larger stumps with mattocks and a winch.
We encourage volunteers to use our minibus for transport. If you live near this task and wish to make your own way you must ring Debbie on 01313370223 to book a space and for joining instructions.
Please bring your lunch and wear appropriate footwear (boots or wellingtons) and waterproof outdoor clothing.
NEW VOLUNTEERS Please only book one task initially. If you do not attend without letting us know, we may cancel any additional task bookings. If you are under 18 you will need to be accompanied by a guardian. Please contact us to discuss arrangements for volunteering with us , or whether other organisations might be more appropriate.
