Gin & Foraging
Fri, 5 May 2017, 16:00 – Sun, 7 May 2017, 12:00 BST
We will be exploring edible plants on the Inshriach estate and surrounding countryside with a focus on those used in gin and other beverages, with gin botanicals expert Susanne Masters and hosted by Walter Micklethwait resident gin maker and location creator. Outdoors we will find, identify and pick wild plants including local juniper. Indoors we will get busy with bar top science discovering the science of taste and aroma. Using freshly foraged finds, local plants and a few exotics we will put a batch of gin through a still, drink classic gin cocktails and novelties made using our local inspirations. Attendees can find their perfect martini by tailoring their own vermouth and gin. Outdoors and at the cosy firesides of Inshriach house there will be plenty of time to learn about juniper and gin around the world. We will also get the riverside sauna going to enjoy the aroma of juniper, the essential gin aromatic, in an alternate form. Gilly, our chef for the weekend will make lunch and dinner with local ingredients, and for those staying at Inshriach on Friday and Saturday nights will also provide dinner on Friday, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.
Walter Micklethwait lives at Inshriach where he set up a distillery and went on to launch a prize winning gin. He is now producing the eponymous Inshriach gin, made entirely with ingredients found on the estate. Walter's distilling shed and saloon bar won Shed of the Year 2015.
