'GIN & JAZZ at the Gatsby'

The 'Gin & Jazz' Dinner event will be in Berkhamsted's iconic restaurant 'The Gatsby' and features well known jazz musicians in the Al Nicholls Quartet. The quartet is  led by Al on the saxaphone. He studied at the Leeds College of Music and has a 20-year wide experience of jazz clubs and festivals up and down the UK; he covers a wide range of jive, blues, and swing and is the star in many other bands. He will be supported by Paul Eldridge on the piano, Guildhall School of Music, who has worked extensively on the London jazz circuit with a wide variety of bands and singers. Also by Manuel Alvarez on the double base, a native of Barcelona who has worked with the top names in Spanish jazz and has been the  the first call to back visiting American; he moved to London in 2011. Also by Jack Lineham, on the drums, London's Trinity College of Music,  has been the resident drummer on the Queen Mary 2 before returning to England to play at many renowned venuues including Ronne Scott's and Glastonbury.

The quartet will play a 1920's jazz set during the Cocktail Hour, which starts at 7pm, there will be occasional background music during the Dinner, and finally upbeat swing music from 10 to 11pm.

The Dinner

Included in the ticket price of £37 is a gin cocktail or a glass of wine on arrival followed by a three course meal:  Starter, Roulade of smoked salmon with blinis and keta caviar; Main, Chicken Chasseur, creamed potatoes and curly kale; Dessert,  Toffee apple and sliced pear crumble with creme anglaise. Vegetable options include Classic Greek salad with feta cheese and cherry tomatoes followed by Roasted vegetable and chicken pea strudel, celeriac mash and red cabbage.

This event is organised to support the 8-year old UK Langa Township Pre-School Trust. To date, in helping 270 children and their stafff annually, LTPT has spent £150,000 on food clothing, new buildings and maintenance, the equipment of offices and kitchens, security fencing, supplies and administration. Funds are raised through donations and profits from events such as this, generally seven annually.The Trust is run by UK volunteers, who charge neither fees nor expenses, so 97% of the money available money goes to the pre-schools and the children.

Gordon Gaddes, retiring after a career in education, administration and business, is involved in work for charities and the Church and in writing and research. He has been the Chairman of the UK Langa Township Pre-School Trust since it started eight years ago. Visiting Cape Town annually  his book, 'Cape Town Stories: Apartheid - its effects and its ending', published in  May, 2016, tries to answer some of the many questions put to him by relatives and friends on return to the UK.
