Gingerbread 101 : Make and Decorate Gingerbread Cookies
Event Information
Description
There is almost nothing so perfectly 'Winter' as the smell of fresh gingerbread being baked and the fire blazing. Making proper, old fashioned gingerbread is almost a lost art, as it is thought to be too complicated or time consuming. Join me for a morning where I will show you how to make the most delicious lightly spiced, but definitely gingery biscuits. Whether you prefer a thick chewy dough, or nice crisp snap, everyone loves this Christmas classic cookie.
Together we will mix, knead, and shape dough, and I will teach you the trick to making sharp outlined cookies, ready for decorating. No sloppy, soft, indistinct shapes here ;) Timing is everything; cooking at the correct temperature for the correct length of time will give you a cookie strong enough to build a house or hang as a decoration on a tree. A gentler heat for shorter time gives you a lovely fresh chewy cookie, perfect for dunking. we have lots of cutters, but if there is a specific cutter you would like to use, feel free to bring your own!
Once we have the knack of rolling and cutting I will show you how to make royal icing to decorate your creations. In this first class we will get to grips with consistency and handling the icing, and do some simple decorations on some premade shapes. If you would like to do more decorating, we will also be holding a gingerbread house decorating workshops. Each guest will take home their creations and all recipes for gingerbread dough and royal icing, plus a morning of memories full of winter cheer, ginger and cinnamon ... and quite possibly a candy cane or two!
