Girl Game Maker Day
Sat 25 March 2017, 10:00 – 13:00 GMT
GIRL GAME MAKER DAY is a free half-day course where girls aged 10-14 will learn to make video games with female games industry professionals.
Our team of experienced game makers will show the girls the basics of making a game: how to code, design and add your own art (if that’s your thing). All girls will make their own unique game and will get to take it home at the end of the session.
Girls will have the opportunity to talk to the team about what it’s like working in the games industry, how to get into making games as a hobby or anything else they’d like to know about.
Girls must turn up at the venue by 9:50am. They should bring a laptop.
Tickets are free but we will be accepting (optional) donations on the door to help cover our costs.
Should parents attend?
Parents and guardians don’t need to stick around - feel free to drop your girls off and pick them up at the end of the course. Our team will help the girls through the course, and the day is run by DBS accredited mentors and STEM ambassadors.
Of course, parents and guardians who wish to stay are welcome to do so.
What should the girls bring?
Girls should bring a laptop that can connect to wifi. No special software is needed.
What software will we use?
We’ll be using Scratch to make our games. Scratch is a free visual programming language targeted at kids and beginners. No prior knowledge of coding is needed, and you don’t need to buy or download any software.
Is this a regular event?
GIRL GAME MAKER DAY is a special one-off event to encourage girls to pick up technical skills as part of Spring Forward Festival. Girls who enjoy the experience are encouraged to come to our regular free, fortnightly sessions for all kids aged 6-16 at CoderDojo (see the website for details).
Who runs this event?
GIRL GAME MAKER DAY is supported by a volunteer team of mentors recruited from the Brighton video games industry, CoderDojo mentors and volunteers from Make Play Code.
What is CoderDojo?
CoderDojo is a coding club for kids aged 6-16, part of a global non-profit movement - see the CoderDojo website for more details.
