Event description

Description

Whether you talk at conferences, local meetups or in your work environment (or want to do those things!), we'd like you to join us for a welcoming and informative evening where you'll hear from other women who work in the tech world about their own experiences of public speaking and, most importantly, you will be able to present a 5 minute talk, get feedback and have opportunity to discuss the experience and hear ideas on how to take it to the next level!

For those of you who were with us in part one of this series, this is the opportunity for you to practise what you learnt - a really important part in taking the next steps in getting better at public speaking. It might be a really hard thing to do, stepping up in front of your group, but the more you do it, the more you'll realise it's a skill you can develop, improve and actually start to enjoy! So get that journey started by working with others aiming to do the same thing, in a safe & supportive environment.

Each attendee will present a 5 minute talk on a subject related to their job to the small breakout group they worked with at the previous event (or assigned a new one if you weren’t there).

There will be opportunity for feedback & discussion after this, and the groups will be hosted by one of our facilitators, who each have their own story & experiences with public speaking and will be helping you to develop and improve your talk, and support you to get your voice out there! We’re sure it’ll be really helpful to hear what others are doing too, and how you can learn from each other.

So…what do you need to prepare?

  • a 5 minute talk which you will present to the group

  • the subject should be something related to your job - maybe something new you've just learnt, or top tips to getting started with a new tool?

  • ideally a technical topic if you are in a technical role - and if you're not, how about something about your business, or something you want to learn about in the tech area?

  • If you have a particular event coming up you want to speak at, or you have an idea for a talk you want to give somewhere, why not pick that topic, even if your longer term plan involves a longer talk.

  • Slides are not essential, but if you’d like to use them, please bring them on a memory stick or bring your laptop with them ready to go.

  • Think about the key messages you want to get across

  • Think about the audience and the level of understanding of the topic

  • and think about what you want your audience to take away, and remember in the future

Perhaps you have an event coming up at work you'd like to present at, or maybe you want to have more “lunch & learn” style events at work, but need to get the ball rolling by actually suggesting & doing one! Or do you attend a local tech meetup, and have an idea of a talk you'd like to give there? Get in touch if you'd like any help choosing a topic.

What's next?

We hope you go away feeling empowered & energised at having done your talk - and with ideas gained from the others in your team about how you can develop & improve. Again, we want to support you through these stages, and give you more opportunities to practise - so our next event, in November, will see all the groups come together to give you a bigger audience to present your next version of the same talk. The buzz you will feel when you've achieved it will be amazing, and with the support of all the others doing the same thing, you'll already be thinking about when you can next get an opportunity to get up there and talk!

What should you bring?

Just yourself, your talk and any slides (which are not essential).

What does it cost?

The event is free for attendees - with the help of our host SolarWinds and our partner Cathcart Associates we will cover the costs.

How long will it last?

Doors open at 18:00, talks will start at 18:30 and we'll be finished by 21:00. Don't worry if you need to leave early, or arrive a little late, you are still more than welcome to attend.

Accessibility

We want our events to be accessible by anyone who wants to come along, so please get in touch at hello@girlgeekscotland.com if you have any specific requirements or questions and we will do our best to help.
