Description

GiF JOHANNESBURG

Monday 18 December – 6.45pm, The Bioscope, Maboneng
Free but RSVP essential.

After hosting events and connecting young creatives in London, Prague and New York, GiF (Girls in Film) is hosting its first event in Johannesburg, South Africa.

GiF is a network aimed to create a space for support, inspiration and collaboration for womxn filmmakers worldwide through events and its online platform - www.girlsinfilm.net

In its first GiF event in South Africa, our host and speakers from local creative community dissect the topic of young womxn spaces, race & politics in the South African film and creative industry.
How to inspire and create spaces for the young generation who don’t have access to higher education, how to address the issue of race and diversity, how to respond to the ongoing narrowing and commodification of what constitutes the 'political'.

A special screening of selected films will be followed by a panel discussions and a Q&A with the public.

IT'S FREE BUT PLEASE RSVP HERE OR HELLO@GIRLSINFILM.NET

Panellists:

+ Zandi Tisani, Writer & Director – From Zaki Ibrahim’s Go Widdit music video in 2012 to winning 2 SAFTA’s in 2016 and working now on her TV show ‘People You May Know’ and first long feature, Zandi has achieved a lot, with sensitivity and humour. In between documentaries and short films, along the necessary commercial to get going, she gives a lot of space to fiction and keeps questioning the South African identity. She is in the heart of the exciting creative moves emanating from Johannesburg, and the world is watching.

+ Bee Diamondhead, Creative Director & Fashion Stylist – Bee is the baddest, an impressive creative force on and off job. After years working as a fashion editor for various publications, she dropped Marie Claire SA a while ago to focus on her freelance career. From styling to casting, her role is one of the main pillar of each projects. For the past 11 years, she has collaborated with her friend Kudzanai Chiurai, renowned Zimbabwean artist and activist. After his last exhibition at Goodman, some pieces of their collaboration are now exhibited at the Zeitz MOCAA.

+ Sihle Hlophe, Writer & Director – With her strong academic background and her wide experience in the industry, Sihle has been using her talent towards mass audiences to conscientise viewers, promote minority languages and give a platform to marginalised voices. She has written and directed two narrative shorts (As I Am and Nomfundo, both in SiSwati) and a handful of documentaries. Her documentary project, "Lobola, A Bride's True Price" recently won the 'Most Outstanding Documentary Project' award at the Durban Film Mart. She is also the founder of Passion Seed Communications, a film and TV production company.

+ Phatstoki, Filmmaker & Photographer – Followed by an ever growing artistic soul with a passion for photography and music, Gontse “Phatstoki” More chose the Market Photo Workshop to be their training ground. Photographer and DJ with already leaps and bounds in their creative career, the young Soweto-based artist started experimenting filmmaking and directed and shot their first music video for DJ Spoko and Matias Aguayo’s new joint Dirty Dancing few months ago.

Phatstoki is also promoter of Pussy Party, a platform for fem-DJs and DJ workshops for womxn.
