Overview
IN-PERSON Girls into Coding!
at CIVO Tech Junction
GIRLS! THE TECH COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! COME AND JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED!
I am delighted to invite you to our IN-PERSON "Girls Into Coding " event! It's a free event. Choose 1 of 4 exciting workshops. There will also be lightning talks to inspire & encourage girls aged 11 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.
You will be able to explore coding activities, robotics, engineering, electronics, and physical computing using the Raspberry, the Micro: bit. This is a fantastic opportunity to use Python, Micropython (text-based language), and Microsoft Makecode while getting some hands-on making time.
IF YOU BOOK MORE THAN ONE TICKET PER PARTICIPANT, YOUR BOOKING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.
THE 4 WORKSHOPS BELOW WILL RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY - THEREFORE EACH PARTICIPANT SHOULD ONLY BOOK ONE WORKSHOP.
PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER YOUR DAUGHTER FOR A WORKSHOP SHE HAS ALREADY PARTICIPATED IN OR YOUR TICKET WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELED.
WORKSHOPS:
Workshop #1: The Forklift Robot (For Ages 11 to 14)
Forklift Robot: Build a Micro:bit powered robot with a working forklift feature!
In this exciting workshop, you’ll construct your own wheeled robot, connect the electronic components, and program it using Microsoft MakeCode. Once complete, you’ll put your robot to the test by manoeuvring it around and using the forklift to lift and transport objects.
No experience needed – just curiosity and creativity
Workshop #2: Remote Hands (age 11-14)
Build a remote-controlled robotic hand! Add sensors to a glove, write code to send the sensor readings wirelessly to the robot hand. Then write code to move the fingers on the hand. In this collaborative activity, the girls will work in pairs.
We will pair the girls up. One will work on the hand, the other the glove. Or they can work together. They don't need to sign up together.
Workshop #3: The Tilting Maze (For Ages 11 to 14)
Ptoinkk! Design and build your own tilting maze game. Code up trigger switches, coloured lights, scores, timers, and sounds. Then play! It's labyrinth meets pinball meets microbit meets coding!
Workshop #4: Build a virtual environment & explore with your own built VR set! (Age 11-14)
Build a virtual environment using CoSpaces that can be explored with a VR headset.
You will build the environment which will be a maze and have objects that can be interacted with along the way. This will be achieved using the range of features in CoSpaces and coding blocks called CoBlocks to give objects characteristics.
Material needed: A mobile phone
LIGHTNING TALKS:
Hanna Jonsdottir
Hanna is a software engineer from Iceland who recently completed her MSc in Computing at Imperial College London. She didn't always know she wanted to pursue a career in tech, she first studied mechanical engineering before discovering programming and realising how exciting it is to build things with software. Since then, she has worked as a backend developer and helped create spaces where girls and women feel encouraged to explore technology, including serving as Outreach Officer for Women in Computing at Imperial and through other outreach initiatives.
Growing up in Iceland taught Hanna resilience and the belief that you never know what could happen unless you try and that things usually have a way of working out. Outside of tech, she loves running, traveling, and exploring big cities. Hanna is passionate about building technology that creates positive impact and encouraging girls to explore STEM with courage and curiosity.
