At The Microsoft Reactor, London
GIRLS! THE TECH COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! COME AND JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED!
I am delighted to invite you to our IN-PERSON "Girls Into Coding " event! It's a free event. Choose 1 of our 6 exciting workshops. There will also be lightning talks to inspire & encourage girls aged 10 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.
You will be able to explore coding activities, robotics, 3D printing/design, 3D VR, electronics, and physical computing using the Nvidia Jetson nano, Node-Red, ThingsOnEdge Cricket, BBC Micro: bit and the Raspberry Pi. This is a fantastic opportunity to use Python (text-based language) and Microsoft Makecode, while getting some hands-on making time.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY- THIS IS AN IN-PERSON EVENT
IF YOU BOOK MORE THAN ONE TICKET PER PARTICIPANT, YOUR BOOKING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.
THE 6 WORKSHOPS BELOW WILL RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY - THEREFORE EACH PARTICIPANT SHOULD ONLY BOOK ONE WORKSHOP.
***** THIS IS AN IN-PERSON EVENT ******
WORKSHOPS:
Workshop #1: Train Your Robot to Dance with You
After building a mini robot incorporating an NVIDIA Jetson Nano, you will use Machine Learning (a form of Artificial Intelligence (AI)) to teach your robot how to dance with you. You’ll learn about machine learning, coding with python, and some new dance moves!
Experience: Beginners are welcome!
Workshop #2: IoT Robots with Node-Red
Build a robot powered by a Microbit and explore IoT (Internet of Things) then code the IoT device with Node-Red. Node-RED is a tool for programming visually, linking up hardware devices, APIs, and online services to communicate with each other over the Internet.
Experience: Beginners are welcome!
Workshop #3: Industrial Automation using Robotics
Learn to control the movements of a robot arm using Python from a Raspberry Pi computer. Connect a game controller to make the control easier. Then challenge yourself to write code to move objects around on the table.
Experience: Beginners are welcome!
Workshop#4: Introduction to 3D Design, 3D Scanning & 3D Printing
A hands-on workshop using 3D design software. The main focus will be on establishing the basic skills needed for 3D modeling. Please bring your own storage device (USB, SD card, or portable hard-drive) to save your work.
Workshop #5: Build a virtual environment & explore with your own built VR set!
Build a virtual environment using CoSpaces that can be explored with a VR headset.
You will build the environment which will be a maze and have objects that can be interacted with along the way. This will be achieved using the range of features in CoSpaces and coding blocks called CoBlocks to give objects characteristics.
Experience:
Basic working knowledge of block-based code would be beneficial but beginners are welcome! They will be guided by instruction sheets and a live tutorial.
Material needed: A mobile phone
Workshop #6: Invention Workshop
We will be bringing along a BIG box of microbits, motors, sensors, displays, gears, wheels, levers, springs, tools, sticky stuff, and lots more! Your challenge: to create and code an amazing invention using this kit, the guidance sheets, the ideas sheets, and the help of your mentors.
Experience: Beginners are welcome!
LIGHTNING TALKS:
Siddha Ganju - Journey into AI by being curious
Siddha Ganju, an AI researcher whom Forbes featured in their 30-under-30 list, is a self-driving and medical instruments architect at NVIDIA. As an AI adviser to NASA Frontier Development Lab, she helped build an automated meteor detection pipeline for the CAMS project at NASA, which ended up discovering a comet.
Her work ranges from visual question answering to generative adversarial networks to gathering insights from CERN's petabyte-scale data and has been published at top-tier conferences including CVPR and NeurIPS.
Siddha serves as a featured jury member in tech competitions like CES and authored "O'Reilly's Practical Deep Learning for Cloud, Mobile and Edge."
Patricia De Boer - Enabling Your Future Options and Choices by Choosing STEM
Patricia studied CS, EE and was an engineer at the start of her career. Over the past 20 years, she has taken other roles in Product Management, M&A, and Go-to-Market Partnerships. Because of her STEM background, she has been able to take on such roles successfully.
Jessie Auguste - Building securely as your superpower!
Jessie is a software engineer passionate about empowering tech builders and tech users to be secure online. Part of the Coding Black Females leadership team and a Black Valley ambassador, Jessie works with communities to improve access to tech.
There will be a 15 min break (please bring a snack).
TERMS OF PARTICIPATION:
Each participant can only choose one workshop. Each workshop lasts approximately 2 hours

There is no longer a legal requirement for people with Covid-19 to self-isolate. However, if you have any of the main symptoms of Covid-19 (a new and continuous cough, a high temperature, a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell) you are advised to take a test. The public health advice is still to stay at home and avoid contact with other people whilst you are awaiting results.
We will continue to monitor the situation, including any Government Guidelines and regulations, and adapt and update where needed to ensure we provide a safe event.
